R-404A is a near-azeotropic, non-ozone-depleting HFC refrigerant blend primarily used for low and medium-temperature commercial refrigeration applications. It is a colorless, non-flammable gas at atmospheric pressure.

Composition
R-404A is a blend of three hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) components:
  • HFC-125 (Pentafluoroethane): 44% by mass
  • HFC-143a (1,1,1-Trifluoroethane): 52% by mass
  • HFC-134a (1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane): 4% by mass

Usage and Handling
  • Applications: It is widely used in food display cases, deep freezers, cold storage rooms, ice machines, and transport refrigeration.
  • Lubricant: R-404A requires the use of polyolester (POE) oil in the compressor. Mineral or alkylbenzene oils must be replaced when retrofitting older systems.
  • Charging: Because it is a near-azeotropic blend, it must be charged into the system in its liquid phase to maintain the correct composition.
  • Environmental Status: Due to its high GWP, R-404A is subject to phase-down regulations in many regions (e.g., the Australian HFC phase-down began in 2018). Lower GWP alternatives such as R-448A and R-449A are recommended replacements.
